Developing Who We Are

The faith journey takes us on a road of self-awareness and growth.  As we read God’s Word and the teachings of Jesus, we hear messages about our attitudes, our behaviors, our words and our actions.  These are all things that we can control in our everyday life.  Instead of wasting our time worrying and wringing our hands about what other people are doing, thinking or saying we would do well to focus that effort on developing the Fruit of the Spirit in our own lives and relationships.  After all, we have the most control over one thing more than any other…how we choose to respond.  May we strive to grow the Fruit of the Spirit in who we are in the world.  Amen.

Perseverance

Don’t quit…don’t give up…get up…keep going…keep seeking…keep trying…believe.  Here we are back to talking about attitude and perspective.  Attitude is formed over a period of time by experience and observation.  The things we chose to take in with our senses have significant impact on the formation of our attitudes.  Things we chose to read, what we chose to listen to, etc.  What is interesting here are the words…we chose, what we decide to spend our time on plays into our attitude.  We can develop the courage to persevere in difficulties and tough times or we can be stagnant and let those times defeat us.  To be clear none of this occurs in 140 characters or less…it takes time!  My personal definition of perseverance is be patient and be persistent and believe good things will come.  If you are unsure what to do about this, may I suggest a book?  Start with the bible and a sincere prayer to God and as the song says, let Jesus take the wheel.  Amen.

God’s Time

God is always working for our good.  Even when life seems hopeless and we feel the darkness of evil surround us…God is with us.  Reach out to Him in prayer…true, honest, sincere prayer that is delivered with belief that He is there listening to you.  If your heart doesn’t truly believe in God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God than your words are just sound.  We get frustrated because God does not respond the way we want or the way we think He should…that is not trust in God.  God does answer our prayers and He does provide us guidance.  The only reason we miss it is because the self is powerful and stubborn and won’t get out of the way.  God created you, He knows all about you and what you are going through in this world…He loves you, surrender your situation to Him and listen…He is caring for you in a far better way than you can do yourself.  I pray we all do a better job of giving ourselves to God’s time in the New Year.  Amen.

Patience

During this Advent time of year, the Fruits of the Spirit keep coming into my mind.  We wait for the celebration of the birth of our Savior.  Nothing about His coming was designed by us, the human race.  This is a clear example of God at work for the good of all people.  We must be patient on our faith journey and not give up hope…no matter how bad things may get, in any situation.  Prayer…thoughtful, sincere, true and honest prayer, that is based in trust and belief in Jesus Christ is very powerful.  The answers to our prayers are not based on our plans or our desires and that is a good thing.  When you are discouraged or frustrated regarding a person or situation…take it to the Lord in prayer and remember when God was at work with His plan over 2,000 years ago, the results both then and now have been better than any human plan ever conceived.  I pray we all trust in the Lord and seek patience with His plan for our lives.  Amen.

Wait For The Lord

The ways of the Lord are exemplified by the Fruits of the Spirit…love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  It is so easy to get derailed and off track with these ways because the world is pushing for self-centered behaviors of hate, anger, dissension, me first, greed, faster, get out of my way and other similar attitudes.  God keeps His promises and He will encourage you, hold you up and strengthen you for every and any battle…it is up to you to be engaged in your relationship with Jesus Christ and for you to read the Word of God to gain the wisdom and understanding God provides.  If we are unsure of where God is in our life then we should continue in prayer and wait for Him…He always shows up, always.  I pray we seek to live the Fruits of the Spirit in our relationship with the Lord and with others.  Amen.

Persistence

When we read about prayer in the Bible there are words and phrases such as “without ceasing” or “continually” and when we read about the life of Jesus we find He spent hours and sometimes even the whole night in prayer to God His Father.  In today’s society we are so quick to move from one item to the next it seems there is little attention paid to dedication and commitment.  The ability to stick to it, not giving up and believing the next attempt will be the one that is successful…these are the attributes of true success in life.  This approach to anything takes patience, persistence and faith.  We learn the most from trying and failing and we succeed by taking what we learn and applying it to the future.  The same is true in our prayer life…if you have been praying about something and you haven’t seen results yet, don’t give up, keep praying.  God hears you and He will work things out in His time, His way, not based on our thoughts or our timetable…and thankfully His way is always better than ours.  Be persistent in prayer and give thanks to God for all your blessings.

Joyful, Patient, Faithful

Happy Friday…you know when you are having one of those times when it feels like something is going wrong with everything?  When you are able to take a step back and review you often find the one common thing is your perspective…I know, I know not what you wanted to read.  When things seem to pile up like this I have learned to immediately turn to prayer…stop what ever you are doing and ask God to intervene, to guide you and to cleanse your perspective.  Maybe it’s time for a new approach to something, to look at it differently or just to open your mind to new possibilities to old issues.  Whatever it is we don’t have to do it alone.  May God be with you and provide you comfort.

Wait For The Lord

I find sometimes that there are periods of time when God seems distant in my faith journey.  A sense that things that were once clear and focused seem less clear and jumbled up.  It would be easy to fret and wonder why, what happened, what changed and of course, is it me, did I do something wrong?  These are not times to invite worries and anxieties into your life.  This is a moment to know and to trust that God is still on the throne in heaven and He will be with you.  Think of Job in the bible…he had everything and I mean everything taken from him in life, plus he had these great “friends” telling him he must have done something wrong for all this to happen.  Job did not give in and stop believing…he persisted in faith and the Lord restored him.  There are and will be times when the Lord seems far off, be patient, stand in faith and wait for Him.  May God’s love and comfort be with you.

Give Good Fruit

Our lives are filled with choices and decisions.  We are the ones responsible for the attitudes and behaviors we present to the world.  We are blessed with the redeeming blood of Christ.  We have been forgiven for our sins.  Let’s go out and give good fruit.  No matter what your circumstances or your place in life today you can give the good fruit we receive from the Holy Spirit.  It doesn’t take money and it doesn’t take a certain level of influence in society.  The Fruit of the Spirit is all about making the choice to behave as we have been instructed to.  We should not expect the world to always be kind and generous to us as it is broken, however, we know that no matter what, God is with us and He is holding us.  May we share the blessings the Lord has given to us with others.

Be Still

So many are searching for something.  Searching for answers to questions like why, what if, when…we want and seek to know and when we arrive at a conclusion what do we find?  The human race is broken, all of us, we are caught up in a cycle of work in-rinse-repeat.  If we continue to trudge along this way we are unable to see the good things, unable to have the perspective that can change behaviors.  In order to see and hear the Lord we need to take time, to be still and listen.  Listen for the direction and guidance of the Holy Spirit instead of our feelings and uncontrolled emotions.  Be still before the Lord and you will see His goodness.  May God’s joy and peace be with you.
